Gerard J. Mayer, MD, Pediatrician, Physician at Northern Westchester Hospital, Northwell Health, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in pediatrics.
Dr. Mayer became interested in the medical field when he was a child. He was inspired by his pediatrician to become a doctor. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Saint Andrews Scots School in Argentina in 1960. He then received a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Buenos Aires in 1967. Continuing with his education, he interned in pediatrics at the Michael Reese Hospital from 1968 to 1969. From there, he became a resident in pediatrics at the Michael Reese Hospital from 1969 to 1970, Montefiore Medical Center from 1970 to 1971 and the Strong Memorial Hospital from 1971 to 1972. The following two years, he was a fellow in pediatrics at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.
Dr. Mayer is most proud of the lives he was able to help during his time in the medical profession. Another proud moment was receiving an Achievement Award from the Yorktown Police Department for saving an elderly woman. He began his career in 1972, as an attending physician at North Central Bronx Hospital, remaining until 1974. In 1974, he became an attending physician at Montefiore Hospital, where he held the position until 2021. During that time, he also held the positions of attending physician at North Central Bronx Hospital from 1976 to 1998, head of pediatric emergency at Montefiore-NCB from 1978 to 1983, and head of pediatric primary care at North Central Bronx Hospital from 1978 to 1985. Since 1985, he has worked in private practice in Yorktown Heights and since 1986, he has been an attending physician and pediatrician at Northern Westchester Hospital.
Civically, Dr. Mayer has a volunteer residency at CEMIC in Argentina. He has no plans to retire yet but when he does, he would like to volunteer for an organization. As a testament to his success, Dr. Mayer was awarded by medical students at a dinner at the New York Medical College and received an Award for 35 Years of Service from the Northern Westchester Hospital. He was also inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
