Theresa M. Cheng, MD, PhD, Chief of Neurosurgery at Affinity Health Systems, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in neurosurgery.
Dr. Cheng always loved to work with her hands and was fascinated with the brain and spinal cord. She always wanted to help people, which ultimaely led her on her professional path. Before starting her career, she earned a degree in biomedical engineering from Marquette University in 1982. From there she matriculated at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where she received a Doctor of Philosophy in molecular biological neurosciences in 1987 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1989. Continuing with her education, she joined the Mayo Clinic as a neurological surgery resident from 1989 to 1995 and as a postdoctoral fellow in molecular genetics from 1992 to 1993. She is currently working towards a Master of Business Administration at John Hopkins University.
Dr. Cheng has enjoyed that she has been able to give back and is proud of her missionary work. She began her career with the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1983 and remain until 1989. While there, she held the positions of teacher assistant of medical gross anatomy, research assistant, teaching assistant of medical neuroanatomy and adjunct instructor of medical neuroanatomy. From there she joined the Mayo Clinic in 1989 and remained until 1999 as a special fellow of neurosurgery. From 1995 to 2002, she was with Mayo Health Systems as a consultant in neurosurgery and a chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery. Since 2002, she has been the chief of neurosurgery and since 2007, she has been the director of medical operations at Affinity Health Systems.
Civically, Dr. Cheng has been a member of many committees and boards including on the board of directors of Dunn-Eau Claire-Pepin County Medical Society from 1999 to 2002, a Eucharistic minister at a Catholic Church from 1980 to 2008 and on the board of directors of the Gold Cross Ambulance Service since 2002. As a testament to her success, Dr. Cheng has received myriad accolades, including but not limited to receiving numerous awards for medical excellence from the Luther Midelfort Mayo Health Systems and Affinity Health Systems since 1995, a Second Place Award at the Wisconisn State Fair in 1985, a Lemmon Award for Outstanding Medical Student in Surgery in 1989 and a Regional United State Philanthropy Award from St. Louis, Missouri. She is also listed in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and Who’s Who in the World.
