Since having his appendix removed in the sixth grade, Dr. Hays became intrigued in the medical field and set his sights on pursuing a professional career in medicine. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from Southern Illinois University in 1970 and later a Doctor of Medicine from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in 1977. Continuing his medical requirements, Dr. Hays completed a residency at the University of Illinois and Methodist Medical Center of Illinois by 1980, subsequently joining a private practice that same year.
Board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, Dr. Hays has excelled as a clinical assistant professor of family practice at the University of Illinois since 1982, as well as staff president of Herrin Hospital since 1983. Likewise, he practices out of his eponymously named office, William F. Hays MD Ltd., where he specializes in family medicine. In his many years of professional expertise, Dr. Hays recalls the highlight of his career was running into the mother whose baby he resuscitated many years earlier. Likewise, he resuscitated another man on two separate occasions.
A fellow of the American Academy Family Practice, Dr. Hays maintains affiliation with various professional organizations, including the American Medical Association and Illinois Medical Society. He is also a member of the Williamson County Medical Society, Illinois Association Family Practice, and Illinois State Medical Society. Finding great success, Dr. Hays has been listed to Consumers Research Council Americans Top Family Doctors and was named Illinois Academy Family Practice Physician of the Year in 2008. Additionally, he was the recipient of the John A Logan Men’s Health Conference Champion Award in 2012, as well as named Herrin Chamber Of Commerce Citizen Of The Year in 2011 and Southern Illinois Medical Society Favorite Son in 2009. To attest to his legacy, Dr. Hays can also be found in the 20th and 21st editions of Who’s Who in the Midwest.
