Before starting her career path, Dr. Mussallem earned a Bachelor of Science in physiology from the Ohio State University in 1996. From there, she studied naturopathy at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona in 1998. From there, she received a diploma in biomedical sciences from Midwestern University Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2000. She then received a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Midwestern University Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2004. Continuing with her education, she joined the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine as an intern studying family medicine in 2005 and completed her residency including an advanced year of hospital medicine training in 2011. Upon completion of her education, she became board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine.
After her residency, Dr. Mussallem chose to stay with the Mayo Clinic, where she remains to this day. She currently leads Mayo Clinic Florida’s breast cancer survivorship program at the Robert and Monica Jacoby Center for Breast Health. In 2015, she founded the Integrative Medicine and Breast Health Program at Mayo Clinic Florida. Dr. Mussallem is a national expert on breast disease, cancer survivorship, lifestyle medicine, and integrative oncology. Her research focuses on lifestyle medicine, cancer survivorship, high-risk breast lesions, ductal carcinoma in situ, purposeful living, and integrative medicine and health. She is frequently invited to give national presentations on her research, appear on radio and television shows, and has authored numerous journal articles, abstracts, and other written publications. In addition to her clinical and research activities, Dr. Mussallem is active in medical education, which has included curriculum and course development in hospital medicine and diagnostic breast health for the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine in Rochester, MN and the Medical Residency Programs at Mayo Clinic in Florida. Dr. Mussallem is Chief Executive Editor for the National Consortium of Breast Centers, Ms. Medicine Provider Executive Group, and is an active member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine and Health, Society of Integrative Oncology, and the American Academy of Family Medicine. As a testament to her success, Dr. Mussallem has received myriad accolades, including a Mayo Clinic Top Box Patient Experience Provider Recognition Award, Compassionate Doctor Award from 2010 to 2020, Patient Choice Award from Vitals Patient’s Choice Award from 2010 to 2015 and 2017 to 2020, Silver Award from the National Health Information in 2019 and the Mayo Clinic Because of You Faces of Philanthropy Award in 2018, to name a few.
