Having accrued four decades of professional expertise, Dr. Belgorod is a leading ophthalmologist in New York City with unprecedented and comprehensive patient care. Since 1981, he has flourished working out of his private practice, Barry Miles Belgorod, M.D., P.C., where he focuses on providing premier patient care including custom contact lenses, comprehensive eye exams, PRK surgery, second opinion diagnosis, glaucoma treatment, specialty contact lenses for disease and cataract surgery. Notably, he holds patents for electronic photochromic lens, laser vision correction surgery, using plant-derived, non-opioid analgesics and anti-inflammatories.
In addition to his private practice work, Dr. Belgorod has been on the attending staff of the New York-Presbyterian Hospital since 1982, a research associate in the Department of Chemistry at Queens College since 1997, and a clinical instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Weill Cornell University Medical College since 1981. In 2011, he also became an attending medical staff at Lenox Hill Hospital Northwell Health, having previously been an associate medical staff member since 2008. Earlier, Dr. Belgorod served the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital as an assistant attending surgeon from 1981 to 1995 and as an associate attending surgeon from 1995 to 2008.
Dr. Belgorod’s father was a dentist in the Manhattan Project during World War II and he conducted research on radio nucleates in teeth. Both he and his mother, who he recalls as a “remarkable, wonderful, intelligent, cultured and classy woman” were a great inspiration to the young Dr. Belgorod. With the support of his family, Dr. Belgorod received a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, with honors, from Queens College in 1973 and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in 1977. He went on to complete his medical requirements with an internship in internal medicine at the Pennsylvania Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and a residency in ophthalmology at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital by 1981.
Finding great success throughout the course of his career, Dr. Belgorod has been named to New York Magazine Best Doctors since 2017 and to Castle-Connolly Best Doctors since 2016. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, New York Academy of Medicine, American Academy of Ophthalmology and New York State Ophthalmological Society, he attributes his success to being a perfectionist and to his parents.
