Janice H. Alexander, RN, MD, Physician at Cedarburg Family Wellness, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in family medicine.
Dr. Alexander is a board-certified physician specializing in family medicine, weight management, and obstetrics and gynecology celebrating more than 40 years of practice. Her interest in medicine was inspired by her positive experiences with her childhood pediatrician, Dr. Farrah Scooten, and her memories of recovering from a severe bout of pneumonia at a young age. By the age of 6, Dr. Alexander had resolved to become a doctor and spent her teen years as a volunteer and nurse’s aide, earning her LPN license at age 19. She continued her education at Wayne State University, completing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1971 and a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1979.
Until 1986, Dr. Alexander completed an emergency and family practice residency at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan, followed by an additional two-year OB-GYN residency at Saginaw Cooperative Hospital. She began her practice as a staff surgeon in obstetrics-gynecology and a medical educator in women’s healthcare at Columbia and St. Joseph Hospitals in Milwaukee in 1988. In addition to her work with Columbia and St. Joseph Hospitals, Dr. Alexander was a physician with Mayo Health Systems between 2002 and 2011, and practiced obstetrics and emergency medicine at Richland Medical Center from 2011 until 2020. Currently, Dr. Alexander is focused on her work as a provider at Cedarburg Family Wellness and a clinical instructor at Marquette University.
Over the course of her career, Dr. Alexander has delivered more than 9,000 babies, been a clinical instructor at institutions including Michigan State University and the Medical College of Wisconsin, and has both taught and provided care to international patients in Russia, Honduras, and Tanzania for almost two decades. She was recently profiled in a 2021 News Graphics article about her work in Tanzania and dedication of a new hospital in her honor, and she continues to give back to the community via medical mission trips, volunteer work with the American Red Cross, and advocacy for healthcare access and affordable care for her patients. In recognition of her work, she was presented with a Jefferson Award for Community Service and is a five-time Patient’s Choice honoree. As a part of her commitment to remaining on the cutting edge of her practice, Dr. Alexander is a fellow of the AAFP, the ACOG, the American Medical Association, the AFS, and many others.
