Upon earning a Bachelor of Arts from the College of the Holy Cross in 1964, Dr. DeMaria attained a Doctor of Medicine from the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in 1968. Following this accomplishment, he completed an internship at St. Vincent Hospital in Massachusetts, a residency at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in New York and a cardiology fellowship at the University of California Davis by 1973. After teaching as a professor of medicine at the aforementioned institution for nine years until 1981, Dr. DeMaria went on to serve as a professor of medicine and chief of cardiology at the University of Kentucky from 1981 to 1992 and the University of California (UC) School of Medicine, San Diego, from 1992 to 2004. He went on to serve the University of California School of Medicine as the vice-chairperson of internal medicine, the Judith and Jack White Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine and the director of the Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center between 1998 and 2016.

Presently, Dr. DeMaria excels as the director at the Kentucky Heart Institute, a role he commenced in 1989. Abundantly awarded in his career, he was granted honorary degrees from the University of Bordeaux in France and Kagawa Medical University in Japan and also established the Anthony DeMaria Chair in Cardiology at UC San Diego and the University of Kentucky. Well regarded for a career full of accomplishment, Dr. DeMaria has earned accolades from the American Academy of Medical Administrators, the American Medical Writers Association, Tufts University, the University of Leiden and more. He cites becoming the president of the American College of Cardiology and receiving the Gold Medal Award of the European Society of Cardiology, which was presented in Barcelona, Spain, in 2017, as the highlights of his career. To attest to his legacy, Dr. DeMaria is also listed in editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and Who’s Who in the West.
