Maribel Campos Rivera, Professor at the University of Puerto Rico, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in medical education.

From watching her father excel as a physician in Puerto Rico, Dr. Campos Rivera desired to take on a career in which she could be a public servant to her community. Originally seeking a career in biomedical engineering, she eventually found her way back to her roots and pursued becoming a pediatrician. Dr. Campos Rivera received a Bachelor of Arts in biology and pre-medicine from the University of Puerto Rico and a Master of Business Administration in health care management from the University of Phoenix. Returning to her alma mater, she achieved a Master of Science in clinical research, as well as a Doctor of Medicine in 1998. Additionally, she is certified as a wellness coach.

Upon spearheading her professional career, Dr. Campos Rivera gained initial experience while working in private practice for two years. In 2006, she joined the faculty at the University of Puerto Rico as a professor within the medical sciences department. Excelling in her role for 14 years, she focuses her teaching to undergraduate and medical students on research, along with perinatal medicine, obesity medicine and development origins of disease. Alongside her primary role, she is active with the Boys and Girls Club. Honored for professional success, Dr. Campos Rivera was the recipient of a Doctor’s Choice Award and Award for Commitment to Volunteer Work for the American Academy of Pediatrics. She was also named Champion of the Walk by her local chapter of the March of Dimes. Dr. Campos Rivera attributes her success simply to persistence.

To remain abreast of her industry, Dr. Campos Rivera maintains affiliation with the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, the Obesity Society and the Obesity Medicine Association. Recently, she has been focused on achieving her board certification in obesity medicine so that she could develop not only the clinic in Puerto Rico but also build into it an interdisciplinary approach that will have the teaching process embedded in it. In five years’ time, her goal is to be able to train the next generation of physicians and to be able to work obesity medicine into their curriculum. In her spare time, Dr. Campos Rivera enjoys gardening and volunteering.
