Margo Mazur Schleman, MD, Pediatric Cardiologist and Researcher at Astra Merck Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in pediatric cardiology.
Dr. Schleman was initially inspired by her father’s love of chemistry and medicine although he was not a doctor. While she was young, she fell ill and had to spend months in the hospital. Despite the negative circumstance for her experience in the hospital, it helped influence her to take on the path of pediatric cardiology. She saw a lot of doctoring of sick children. She was in a ward with five girls, some were very sick. Today these wards don’t exist, she was in a big room with other girls. She would sneak into the office, read the medical charts and see what was going on with her friends. She listened to doctors on rounds. It was all interesting to her, but she didn’t know she would go into the field. It wasn’t until college that she knew. She was always interested in the sciences but never thought about going to medical school. Her classmates were premedical and she was not. She saw the possibility when she saw what they were doing. The challenge was four more years of school. She committed to four more years of school and then five more years after that for training. She matriculated at New York University earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1966 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1970. She then joined the Long Island Jewish Medical Center in 1970 as an intern pediatrics for a year, as a resident for the following year and then as fellow in pediatric cardiology, until 1975.
The highlight of Dr. Schleman’s career was traveling to Africa and working with her husband and family for a year. They worked in a government hospital in Liberia for a year, treating various medical issues that plagued the area. Dr. Schleman regards it as “a great experience.” She began her career as a pediatrics cardiologist with Albert Einstein College from 1975 to 1976. She then took the same position with the St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children from 1976 to 1981. From there, she moved on to Jefferson Medical College in the same position for the following year. In 1982, she became the assistant director of research at Squibb & Son, until 1983. She moved up to director of research with Smith Kline Beckman in 1984 staying until 1989. From 1989 to 1994, she held the same position at Marion Merrell Dow Incorporated. Also during that time, she volunteered for the staff of pediatrics at Children’s Medical Center from 1991 to 1993. In 1994, she joined Astra Merck Inc. as the executive director of clinical research and remained there until she retired. As a testament to her success, Dr. Schleman was inducted as a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Cardiology and the American College of Chest Physicians. She is also listed in the 24th edition of Who’s Who in the Midwest, 1st edition of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and the 1st edition of Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
