Dr. Everett H. Heath, VMD, PhD, Veterinarian at Home Veterinarian Care, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in veterinarian medicine.

Inspired by his father, a physician, and his brother, who attended medical school, Dr. Heath desired to enter the medical profession. In his second year of college, he decided to take a year off and took on a job working on a farm. While working on the farm, he gained a great deal of experience working with animals and had the chance to do a bit of traveling. Combining the influence of his father and brother, with his experience with animals, he decided taking the path of a veterinarian would be a sound choice. Dr. Heath earned a Bachelor of Arts from Swarthmore College in 1957 and received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in 1962. Continuing with his education, he earned a Master of Science from Purdue University in 1964 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania in 1969.

Dr. Heath commenced his career in 1962 as an instructor at Purdue University, remaining until 1964. From 1966 to 1974, he was an assistant professor turned associate professor at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul. In 1978, he joined the University of Illinois Urbana as an associate professor moving up to professor of veterinarian medicine, staying until 1986. Finally, from 1987 until his retirement in 1998, he was a veterinarian with Home Veterinarian Care, as well as an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois from 1987 to 1996. Throughout his career trajectory, Dr. Heath most enjoyed doing house calls as a veterinarian and getting to help pets in their times of need.

In his career, Dr. Heath recalls one of the most enjoyable parts of his career were his opportunities to travel throughout the United States, as well as across the globe. Spending many years in Nigeria, Dr. Heath excelled as a senior lecturer at the University of Ibadan from 1964 to 1966 and again from 1974 to 1978. The experience opened his eyes to not only a foreign culture, but it helped him see that the reputation of the country was all wrong and people around the world, in general, are alike in nature. He recounts that the Nigerian people are a lot like the American people, in both positive and negative aspects.

Dr. Heath has been a member of the board of directors for the Lynchburg Peace Education Center since 1990. Notably, he was the author and editor of “Anatomy and Physiology of Tropical Livestock,” from 1985. As a testament to his success, Dr. Heath has been inducted as a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Veterinarian Anatomists and World Association of Veterinarian Anatomists. He served as president of the Piedmont Veterinarian Medical Association from 1990 to 1991. To add to his legacy, Dr. Heath is also listed in the 24th edition of Who’s Who in the South and Southwest.
