Dennis Jay Hurwitz, MD, FACS, Plastic Surgeon and Director at the Hurwitz Center for Plastic Surgery, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in plastic surgery and business management.
Supported by 50 years of experience within the realm of medicine, Dr. Hurwitz has excelled as the director of The Hurwitz Center for Plastic Surgery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, since 1984. At his medical facility, he specializes in all areas of plastic and aesthetic surgery, having served as a pioneer in his field for his safe and effective surgical procedures in body contouring and reconstructive surgery. Offering services in weight loss, cleft lip, and cleft palate reconstructions, he has also pioneered spiral flap breast reshaping, J-toroplasty upper body lifts, oblique flankplasty, L-brachioplasty and gluteal thigh flaps.
While serving in his illustrious role, Dr. Hurwitz also flourished at the University of Pittsburgh in several academic roles, including assistant professor of surgery, clinical associate professor, visiting professor of surgery, professor of plastic surgery, medical director of the Cleft Palate Craniofacial Center, and clinical professor of plastic surgery between 1977 and 2012. During this time, he was also the founder of the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Center and Craniofacial Surgery Program on campus. Previously, he was an attending surgeon at Magee-Women’s Hospital at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Board-certified in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Dr. Hurwitz is a diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Doctor of Medicine, both from the University of Maryland, and completed his internship and residency in surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Thereafter, he completed a second residency in general surgery at Mary Hitchcock Hospital, a third residency in plastic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and a fellowship in craniofacial surgery at the General Hospital of Mexico City. While completing his medical training, he enlisted in the United States National Guard from 1970 to 1972 and was a captain in the United States Army Reserves, from which he departed in 1980.
Demonstrating versatility in his profession, Dr. Hurwitz has contributed to a plethora of professional creative works, including authoring more than 170 scientific papers and book chapters. He wrote “Comprehensive Body Contouring: Theory and Practice” in 2016 and “Total Body Lift” in 2005. Additionally, he was a clinical editor of the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Journal from 2007 to 2014. Civically involved as well, he has been a director of the Maimonides Division of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh since 2016, having formerly served the organization as a board member. He was also vice president and treasurer of the Zionist Organization of America.
To remain abreast of developments in the field of medicine, Dr. Hurwitz has maintained affiliation with myriad organizations, including as a member of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, American Cleft Palate Association, and Lipoplasty Society of America; as president of the Allegheny County Medical Society, the Greater Pittsburgh Plastic Surgery Society, the Ohio Valley Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Robert H. Ivy Pennsylvania Plastic Surgery Society; as a founding member of the Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons; and as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
In light of his contributions to medicine, Dr. Hurwitz was honored with the Walter Scott Brown Lectureship at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and has been recognized with Top Doctor Awards from Castle Connolly between 2001 and 2017. Additionally, he earned a Faculty Teaching Award from the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh in 2005 and was named Best Attending Presentation at the 34th Annual Meeting of the Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons in 2017.
Highlighted in the 65th and 71st editions of Who’s Who in America, Dr. Hurwitz intends to continue working in Pittsburgh in the near future, as well as extend his expertise to new hospitals in Kuwait and Mumbai, India. In these locations, he will notably be directing the state-of-the-art stem cell therapy clinics.
