Hailing from a family of physicians on her mother’s side of the family, Dr. Gonzalez Del Rio had aspired to become a doctor from a young age. She loved everything about the human body and has a passion for helping people, so her professional path was clear. Notably, Dr. Gonzalez Del Rio achieved a Doctor of Medicine from Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic in 1989. Soon thereafter, she completed her required residency in 1994 and went on to officially spearhead her career.
Serving in private practice in Puerto Rico for 16 years, Dr. Gonzalez Del Rio relocated to the continental United States to work as a pediatrician for the Pine Ridge Indian Health Service in Pine Ridge, South Dakota from 2014 to 2016. Since 2016, she has excelled as a pediatrician for the Yakama Indian Health Service in Toppenish, Washington. A current member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Gonzalez Del Rio hopes to become affiliated with Doctor Without Borders.
From her decades of experience in the medical field, Dr. Gonzalez Del Rio’s advice to aspiring medical professionals is to be empathetic. She emphasizes that understanding the patient’s feelings and problems are incredibly important when it comes to patient care and comfort. To be their equal will make them feel better at ease and allow the visit to achieve a greater outcome. Looking ahead in her career, Dr. Gonzalez Del Rio plans to teach herself how to play the piano. In her spare time, she enjoys going to the gym, writing Spanish poems and traveling, as she has already visited 22 countries in Europe, the Middle East and Central America.
