Andras Kalman Szakal, Retired Emeritus Faculty, Immunologist, and Anatomist, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in biology.

During his time as a student, Dr. Szakal unearthed a passion for biology. In 1961, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in zoology from the University of Colorado and went on to acquire a Master’s degree in biology from his alma mater. By 1972, Dr. Szakal furthered his education once more by attaining a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Tennessee. That same year, he commenced his career as a research biologist at Oak Ridge National Laboratories. He remained in this role for two years, going on to become a principal scientist at Meloy Laboratories in Springfield, Virginia. In 1979, Dr. Szakal became an associate professor in the anatomy department at Virginia Commonwealth University. By 1991, he had demonstrated consistent success as an educator, which earned him a promotion to full professor. He remained in this role until 2005 when he retired under the title of emeritus professor.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Szakal has shared his knowledge by contributing numerous articles to professional journals. Some of his most notable achievements include the discovery of the antigen transport cell, as well as insight into the role of the follicular dendritic cell in aging and identifying its functions as instant transports. As an active member of his industry, Dr. Szakal maintains affiliation with multiple professional organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Virginia Academy of Science and the American Association of Immunologists, among others.

In light of his various accomplishments, Dr. Szakal has been awarded multiple grants to further his research. From 1985 until 2004, the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute on Aging supported his research endeavors. He considers every grant he was awarded to be among the highlights of his career. As a further testament to his success, Dr. Szakal is featured in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and Who’s Who in the World.
