Amelia Reyes Jacang, MD, Retired Pediatrician, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in pediatrics.

With the encouragement of her mother, Dr. Jacang chose to become a doctor based on her aptitude and desire to help people. She attended an agricultural high school and was granted a scholarship in order to attend college. At the age of 14, she commenced pre-medical studies and went on to matriculate at the University of the East in Manila, receiving an Associate of Arts in 1958 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1963. Upon completion of her degrees, she became a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics. She then took a rotating internship at Kuakini Hospital from 1964 to 1965, as well as a residency in pediatrics at New York Polytechnic Hospital in New York from 1965 to 1966. From 1966 to 1967, she was also a resident in pediatrics at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. Continuing with her education, she then became a fellow in pediatric pharmacology at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center from 1967 to 1968.

Dr. Jacang commenced her career in 1969 as a member of the active staff at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children, remaining until 2019. From 1971 until retirement, she was a member of the active staff with Queens Medical Center and from 1990 until she retired, Dr. Jacang was with St. Francis Medical Center West as a member of the active staff. Since 1970, she has had a medical practice specializing in pediatrics. During her career, she was also a member of the Honolulu Drug Selection Board since 1986, on the Hawaii Board of Health from 1982 to 1985 and was secretary of the Bay Health Services from 1984 to 1988. Going on medical missions has been Dr. Jacang’s career highlight, as being able to give back has always been important to her. Most of her medical missions have been in the Philippines, which she continues to do to date.

As a testament to her success, Dr. Jacang has been named Outstanding Jubilarian by Mariano Marcos Memorial State University in 1987 and was the recipient of the Outstanding Member Award from the Filipino’s Women League in 1980. Likewise, she was granted an Outstanding Member Award from the Filipino Chamber of Commerce and Awarded Medical Professional by the Hawaii Filipino Chronicle. She has been inducted as a member of the Hawaii Medical Association, Honolulu Pediatric Society, Philippine Medical Association of Hawaii, Filipino Women’s League and Filipino Chamber of Commerce. A fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, she is also listed in the 22nd edition of Who’s Who in the West.
