Gil A. Micheletti, MD, Dermatologist at Park Plaza Hospital, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Dermatology.
Dr. Micheletti had known he wanted to become a doctor since the age of eight. A family friend, Dr. Donald Duncan, Professor of Anatomy at the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston, would come into his father’s store, where his father would tell him about Gil’s stellar grades. Dr. Duncan then suggested that Gil should work and train with him in his anatomy department, which he did for 11 years until he was 19 years old. At that time Dr. Duncan and he co-authored a paper on an electron microscopic study of the pineal gland of the cat. Upon attending a football game at Rice University, Dr. Micheletti fell in love with the campus and made it the only school for which he applied. Notably, he received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Rice University, with a heavy emphasis in History of Art, foreign language and pre-medical subjects.
Prior to his career in Dermatology, Dr. Micheletti received very little exposure to the field. Enrolled at the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston, he was finally introduced to the discipline by Dr. Orville Stone’s 10 lectures on Dermatology in his junior year, which was when he found his deep interest in pursuing it professionally. He went on to receive a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas in 1973 and completed a pre-Dermatology internship that he designed himself at Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas. From designing his own program, he got a view of other specialties that were connected with Dermatology. Shortly after, he applied for residency and was accepted at Emory University School of Medicine in 1974, remaining in the residency until he graduated in 1977. Shortly thereafter, he became Board certified in his specialty.
Notably, Dr. Micheletti served as the Chief of Dermatology at Park Plaza Hospital for 37 years, having also worked in private practice. Looking back on his career, he remembers various instances in which he helped patients heal from uncomfortable, skin-related conditions. For a patient in the intensive care unit, Dr. Micheletti was able to make a rare diagnosis to cure the patient’s ailments with Niacin. He had another patient admitted to the hospital with back pain that was scheduled to receive disk surgery, but he had a rash over the area and the surgeon needed it to clear up before the surgery. When Dr. Micheletti saw the patient, he had determined that it was not back pain and he did not need surgery, as he determined that the patient had shingles. Subsequently, he treated the patient and the back pain disappeared. He was one of the first to treat HIV Dermatology With one of his patients, he co-authored a paper on the treatment of Kaposi’s Sarcoma and presented it at the International Conference on AIDS. He authored a chapter of a book, writing about the treatment of stasis ulcers. Dr. Micheletti was inducted as a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the Houston Dermatological Society, serving as president of the latter in 2009.
On May 29, 1971, Dr. Micheletti married the love of his life, Mary Frances Abbott. Together they had two successful sons, one of whom is an eminent dermatologist.
