Richard I. Burton, M.D., Retired Orthopedist, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in orthopedics.

Having accrued nearly 60 years of experience in orthopedics, Dr. Burton retired in 2020 after serving the University of Rochester Medical School since 1981. Notably, he was a professor of orthopedics from 1979 to 2012 and a special advisor of the dean’s office from 2012 to 2020. Between 1974 and 2012, Dr. Burton had also served as a faculty member, associate chairman and chairman of the department of orthopedics, head section of hand surgery, Marjorie Strong Wehle professor of orthopedics, acting chairman of the department of neurological surgery, dean’s professor and senior associate dean for academy affairs. Likewise, Dr. Burton worked for Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester as an orthopedist from 1979 to 2012 and as a senior associate orthopedist from 1974 to 1979. In the early 1970s, he gained experience at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation as an assistant and associate professor and head section of hand surgery. Dr. Burton published his book, “Leading Department Excellence to Achieve the Robust Academic Health Center” in 2014.

Dr. Burton received a Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College in 1958 and a Doctor of Medicine from Harvard University in 1962. An intern and resident in surgery at the University of Rochester, he had also completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at Harvard University and a fellowship in hand surgery at Roosevelt Hospital by 1971. Simultaneously, Dr. Burton served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force from 1964 to 1966. A diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, he has served as chairman certificate of added qualifications committee, examiner and board member. Among other notable civic positions, Dr. Burton earned the distinguished honor as an international pioneer in hand surgery from the International Federation for Societies of Surgery of the Hand in 2017. He has also received awards from the University of Rochester, as well as the Executive of the Year Award from the Professional Secretaries International Flower City Chapter in 1981. To attest to his legacy, Dr. Burton is also listed in numerous editions of Who’s Who In Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the East and Who’s Who in the World.
