Joel Edward Lavine, MD, PhD, Professor and Research Vice-Chair of Pediatrics at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in pediatrics and academia.

Renowned for his more than 30 years in medicine, Dr. Lavine most recently served as a professor and research vice-chair of pediatrics at the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons from 2010 to 2020, as well as the University of California (UC), San Diego from 1995 to 2010, both with tenure. Throughout his illustrious career, he has also offered his academic and expertise to such institutions as the Children’s Hospital of Boston, Harvard Medical School, UC San Diego Medical Center and Children’s Hospital and New York-Presbyterian. Notably, Dr. Lavine discovered the sole treatment for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, which is the most common chronic liver disease worldwide. He is also distinguished for discovering the genetic basis for multiple GI/liver disorders, starting a liver transplant program for children in San Diego County and developing the outpatient digestive disease center at New York-Presbyterian for devoted care.

Dr. Lavine received a Bachelor of Arts from UC Berkeley in 1975 and a Doctor of Philosophy from UC Santa Barbara in 1980. In 1984, he went on to achieve a Doctor of Medicine from UC San Diego. Continuing his medical requirements at UC San Francisco, between 1984 and 1989, he was an intern and resident in pediatrics and postdoctoral fellow in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition. A fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, American Academy of Pediatrics and American Gastroenterological Association, he has frequently been selected for Best Doctors, Super Doctors and Top Doctors in the New York City area. In addition, he received the Pediatric Research Prize from the American Liver Foundation in 1989. To attest to his legacy, Dr. Lavine is also listed in various editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the East.
