Cheryl Henrietta Cottrol, MD, MPH, Physician, Neurologist, and Psychiatrist at Affiliates of Neurology & Psychiatry – All Brain MD, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in neurology and psychiatry.

Having accrued more than 25 years of professional experience in her industry, Dr. Cottrol is a renowned neurologist and psychiatrist of the New York metropolitan area. Presently, she serves as a physician, neurologist, and psychiatrist at Affiliates of Neurology & Psychiatry – All Brain MD, a psychoneurological specialized clinic in New York City. In her role, Dr. Cottrol conducts neurologic and psychiatric consultations on traumatic brain injury, post-stroke disorders, epilepsy, migraines, pain syndromes, dementia, and other cognitive disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and attention deficit disorders. In addition to this position, she also serves as a physician at Yale New Haven Hospital in Connecticut. Prior, she served as the medical director of the National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder at Bell University and worked at the trauma center at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Cottrol received a Bachelor of Arts in pre-medicine and pre-medical studies at Yale University and went on to achieve a Doctor of Medicine from the State University of New York Upstate Medical Center. Upon fulfilling her medical requirements, she completed a residency in neurology at the New York Medical College and a residency in psychiatry at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Additionally, Dr. Cottrol earned a Master of Public Health from the Columbia University School of Public Health.

Dr. Cottrol attributes the success of her career, thus far, to divine providence. Growing up in a religious household, the church was extremely important to her family. Through their church connections, Dr. Cottrol met a girl who attended Hunter College High School and exposed her to greater opportunities and the vast subject of science. She was able to join a pre-research and medical program for minority students on Saturdays, which opened her eyes to the medical field and her future. Dr. Cottrol recognizes the impact her family and background have had on her career and, in 2003, she established the Jewel Cottrol Multi-Media Scholarship program in honor of her mother. Likewise, she is a volunteer consultant for group homes for the disabled.

In five years’ time, Dr. Cottrol plans to continue perfecting her practice. She is proud that industry professionals are starting to comprehend how intertwined psychiatry is with neurology and how intertwined psychiatry is with medicine in general. For example, the person who has a headache may also suffer from anxiety and the person who is depressed may have also had a stroke. With this sentiment, she stresses the importance of understanding and working through both fields in order to offer a comprehensive delivery of care.
