Khalid I. Afzal, MD, DFAACAP, Associate Professor at the University of Chicago, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in psychiatry.

Dr. Afzal earned a Doctor of Medicine from Quaid-e-Azam University in 1995. Upon completion of his degree, he became an intern in internal medicine, surgery and obstetrics and gynecology in Pakistan from 1995 to 1996. He then became a chief resident in adult psychiatry for the Department of Psychiatry at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine from 2004 to 2008. Dr. Afzal moved on to the University of Chicago, becoming a resident child and adolescent psychiatry for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience from 2008 to 2010. The following year he was a chief resident in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience.

As he progressed in his career, Dr. Afzal decided to continue at the University of Chicago, where he remains to this day. He held the positions of assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience from 2010 to 2017 and since 2017, he has been the associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience. Since 2010, he has also been the director of the Pediatric Psychiatry Consultation-Liaison Service. In 2019, he wrote “Suicide Assessment,” which has been recognized by The National Institutes of Mental Health. As a testament to his success, Dr. Afzal received the Instructor of the Year Award from the Child and Adolescent Section of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Chicago in 2011. Additionally, he earned the Chief Resident Award from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, as well as the David F. Briones MD Award, Excellence Research Award and an Outstanding Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Resident Award. Notably, he has also been listed in the eighth edition of Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
