Thomas Azman, OD, FIALVS, Optometrist at Low Vision Specialists of Maryland and Virginia, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership.
Looking back on his time at the University of Maryland, Dr. Azman recalls a specific moment in the library when he decided to rest his eyes. He took a walk around the aisles and found a brochure detailing the career of an optometrist. He knew then that he had found the profession for him. Though he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in psychology in 1970, he went on to attend the University of Alabama and earned an additional Bachelor of Science in physiological optics. By 1975, he had acquired a Doctor of Optometry, also from the University of Alabama. That year, he was certified as a licensed optometrist in Maryland and Virginia.
Dr. Azman’s career has been filled with many esteemed positions during his years of practice. He served for two years as the president for the Maryland Board of Optometry, staying with the group for another eight years after his term had ended. Since 1975, he has worked as an optometrist with the Low Vision Specialists of Maryland and Virginia, as well as working with patients in his private practice. Dr. Azman is most proud of his success rate with patients, which totals at an astounding 98 percent. Much of his success comes from his creation of the color correction system, as it is a unique system to his practice and is not commonly found among optometrists. The success rate of this system has never dipped below 100 percent, and, because of that, patients come to his practice from Australia, New Zealand, and Africa to correct their color vision issues. In the coming years, Dr. Azman plans to continue practicing optometry for as long as possible. He does not wish to retire until he is given no other choice, as he truly loves his work and finds joy in helping every individual who walks into his office.
