She went on to attend the Boston University Graduate School of Sciences, earning a Master’s in medical sciences upon graduation. By 1997, she had acquired an MD in psychiatry from the Boston University School of Medicine. During her subsequent residency at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, she was inspired by the people with whom she worked. By bringing together the science and art of the connection of relationships, Dr. Cohen knew she could succeed as a psychiatrist. She later became involved in psychopharmacology, which was a new area of medicine at the time. It proved to be incredibly interesting and deeply dynamic because of how frequently medicine was improving, which left Dr. Cohen with the desire to make her mark on the field.
Dr. Cohen’s first taste of working in medicine presented itself to her in 2000. That year, she took on the role of chief psychiatry resident at the Georgetown University School of Medicine. In 2001, she relocated to Newton-Wellesley Psychiatry, where she demonstrated consistent success as an adult psychiatrist and psychopharmacologist until 2012. By 2014, she had gathered plenty of experience, which enabled her to open a practice of her own, Rebecca S. Cohen, MD LLC. She remains there today, acting as the owner, TMS Medical Director, and the psychopharmacologist. More recently, in 2018, Dr. Cohen began to explore the educational sector of medicine by taking on the role of clinical assistant professor in the department of clinical sciences within Florida State University’s College of Medicine. She continues to work with students today, as she has since discovered she enjoys enlightening others about the complex nature of medicine.
Looking back on her illustrious career, Dr. Cohen attributes her success to the fact that she loves what she does. She believes her passion for working came directly from her parents, both of whom set an excellent example as hard-working individuals. Outside of her professional endeavors, Dr. Cohen enjoys reading, swimming, and learning. She additionally volunteers her time at the Jewish Family and Children’s Services. In the coming years, she hopes to continue carrying out the work to which she has dedicated her life.
