Ana Virginia J. Mariano, MD, a Retired Pathologist, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of pathology.

A native of the Philippines, Dr. Mariano attended the University of St. Tomas, Manila where she earned an Associate of Arts and a Doctor of Medicine in 1957 and 1962, respectively. After relocating to the United States in 1963, she assumed employment with Youngstown Hospital as a medical intern. Soon thereafter, she completed residencies in pathology at Rhode Island Hospital and Wayne State University Medical School between 1964 and 1968. Continuing her endeavors, in 1979, Dr. Mariano joined the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital as an associate pathologist until her departure from the institution in 1983. Consequently, she served as the interim pathologist at Clifton Springs Hospital, later accepting the position of  consultant pathologist and later as laboratory director with the VA Medical Center. Furthermore, Dr. Mariano became a staff pathologist with the aforementioned hospital until 2000. She also did locum tenens at the Altoona Hospital, now known as the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Altoona.

In a career filled with a myriad of achievements, Dr. Mariano is particularly proud of her ability to diagnose and understand different types of cancers, as well as what factors are involved in their development. Diagnosing and detecting specific cancers is especially important to Dr. Mariano, considering the widespread issue it has become in the world. She attributes her success simply to the example her parents set for her. Her father encouraged her to study medicine and her mother and her husband offered a great deal of support in anything she decided to pursue. For her achievements in the field, Dr. Mariano has been the recipient of numerous accolades including the Special Contribution Award from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
