Whilst studying pre-medicine, Dr. DeLauro became interested in podiatry after the realization that he could be a small fish in a big pond in need of more professionals. After receiving a Bachelor of Science in physical education from Brooklyn College in 1972, he went on to earn a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, magna cum laude and as valedictorian, from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine in 1976. Continuing his requirements, Dr. DeLauro completed residencies at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine in 1977 and at the Atlanta Hospital and Medical Center in 1978. Eminently qualified in his field, Dr. DeLauro is now a diplomate through the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and for more than 40 years, since 1978, he has worked out of private practice.
A renowned podiatrist, Dr. DeLauro has doubled as a distinguished educator at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, reaching professor emeritus status in 2019. Over the years, he served as an assistant professor of medical sciences, associate professor, vice president, dean and full professor between the years of 1978 and 2018. He has additionally offered his field expertise as an editor of the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, a co-editor of an industry textbook, and by contributing articles to professional journals and chapters. Notably, he received the Dr. Leon Goldman Memorial Award in Biochemistry in 1976. Dr. DeLauro is a fellow of the American College of Foot Orthopedists and the American College of Podopediatrics. Presently, he holds membership with the American Society of Podiatric Medicine, American Society of Podiatric Dermatology, American College of Podiatric Radiologists, American College of Foot Surgeons, New York State Podiatric Society, American Association of Diabetic Educators, American Society of Podiatric Medicine and Pi Delta.
