Erika G. Gonzalez, MD, Chief Executive Officer and Physician at South Texas Allergy and Asthma Medical Professionals, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in allergy and immunology.
Dr. Gonzalez knew early on that she wanted to go into medicine when she was about 12 or 13. She always felt that she wanted to do something to help people in particular kids, so she always felt she wanted to be a pediatrician. During her pediatric residency, she went through her different rotations, and while in allergy and immunology, she really fell in love with the specialty. It is like investigative work, it is a relatively new specialty when you compare it to other specialties. A lot of it is trying to decide what people are reacting to in this area. Dr. Gonzalez earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology at St. Mary’s University in 1998. She then received a Doctor of Medicine from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 2002. From there, she did her internship and residency in pediatrics at Keesler Air Force Base. Upon completion of her degrees, Dr. Gonzalez became board certified by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology and the American Board of Pediatrics.
Dr. Gonzalez has done many years of research while she was a fellow and still does now. She has many publications in food allergies, especially with asthma. She is still involved in the clinical trials involving treatments that will be on the market for the public pertaining to food allergies. Right now, she wants to escalate the business by expanding more into San Antonio. She is politically and civically engaged, so she would like to be in a position where she can make a difference with healthcare in the community, access to healthcare more specifically. Since 2014, Dr. Gonzalez has been the chief executive officer and president of South Texas Allergy and Asthma Medical Professionals. Previously she held the positions of chief of allergy, immunology, and Rheumatology at the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio from 2014 to 2017 and staff allergist with the United States Air Force from 2002 to 2011.
As a testament to her success, Dr. Gonzalez has received an Air Force Commendation Medal in 2006, Air Forced Commanders Award in 2008, Air Force Meritorious Service Award in 2005, Air Force Longevity Award with Clover Leafs in 2004 and 2010, the San Antonino Women’s Leadership Award and was named a Distinguished Alumni by St. Mary’s University. She has also been inducted as a member of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.
