Phyllis J. Heffner, MD, Owner and Functional Psychiatrist at Holistic Child/Adult Psychiatry, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in child psychiatry.
Inspired to pursue psychiatry as an opportunity to positively impact the lives of adolescents during their development, Dr. Heffner has notably worked as a psychiatrist specializing in children’s health for more than 30 years. Since 2015, she has served as the owner and a functional psychiatrist at Holistic Child/Adult Psychiatry, which helps children, adolescents, and adults deal with psychiatric and physical problems using functional medicine, in Columbia, Maryland. Dr. Heffner received a BA from Franklin and Marshall College in 1982 and an MD from Pennsylvania State University in 1986. Upon completing her medical school requirements, she finished a psychiatry residency and internship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill by 1989 and a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at the University of Maryland Hospital/Sheppard Pratt Combined Program by 1991.
Dr. Heffner commenced her professional career as a staff child psychiatrist at Philhaven Hospital in Pennsylvania in 1991. By 1999, she took on the role of medical director of the psychiatric day treatment program at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, which she excelled in until 2007. From 2007 to 2013, Dr. Heffner joined the Good Shepard Center as a staff psychiatrist and acting medical director. In the next three years, she served in various roles as a staff psychiatrist at Brook Lane Behavioral Health, the medical director of Woodbourne Center, and a staff psychiatrist at Adventist Behavioral Health. Before spearheading her holistic clinic, Dr. Heffner was the medical director at Her Mind Her Body from 2016 to 2019.
Committed to continuous learning in her field, Dr. Heffner holds membership with the PANDAS Physician’s Network, American Association for Restorative Medicine, National Academy of Environmental Medicine, and International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society. She is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and is also involved with the International Society of Environmentally Acquired Illnesses, Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs, Institute for Functional Medicine, American Academy for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and International Hyperbaric Medical Association. To attest to her legacy, Dr. Heffner and her achievements can also be found in the third edition Who’s Who Among Human Services Professionals, the first edition of Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare and the third edition of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
