Having accrued more than 40 years of clinical experience in the field of cardiology, Dr. Jennings currently serves as an assistant professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, a role he has performed in since 2007. Among his additional responsibilities, Dr. Jennings is an active staff member at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center and has been a Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions/SCAI cardiologist representative on its Quality Improvement Committee for many years, and has been its representative to the Cardiovascular Credentialing International Board of Advisors and to the American College of Cardiology/ACC’s Cardiac Imaging Leadership Section Council since 2016. He is also a Fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the American Heart Association. He is a member of the American Medical Association, Tennessee Medical Association, Nashville Academy of Medicine, and served for several years on the Canby Robinson Society Board at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Dr. Jennings received a BS degree summa cum laude from Davidson College in 1973 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, and an MD degree from Vanderbilt University in 1977 where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. At Davidson, he was awarded a McConnell Scholarship and a Charles A. Dana Scholarship, and he was the recipient of the Sandy Black Memorial Award in Premedicine. At Vanderbilt, he was the recipient of the Justin Potter Merit Scholarship and was awarded the Weinstein Prize in Medicine. In pursuit of his post-graduate training, he served an internship in internal medicine from 1977 to 1978 and residency in internal medicine from 1978 to 1980, both at Vanderbilt University Affiliated Hospitals. Additionally, he was a fellow of clinical cardiology within Vanderbilt University’s Department of Medicine from 1980 to 1982.  Dr. Jennings is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners, is a licensed physician and surgeon by the states of Tennessee and Kentucky and is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease, and additionally was board certified in Interventional Cardiology 1999-2019.

Dr. Jennings commenced his postgraduate career with the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine as a clinical instructor of medicine from 1982 to 1989, an assistant clinical professor of medicine from 1989 to 1997 and an associate clinical professor of medicine from 1997 to 2007. He also served Saint Thomas Hospital as Medical Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation from 1984 to 2001, as well as Associate Chief of the Department of Cardiac Sciences from 2001 to 2005 and President-elect of the Medical Staff from 2005 to 2006. Dr. Jennings also served as Medical Director for Network Development at Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute from 2007 to 2010.
