Even from a young age, Dr. Van Tuyl knew he was destined to help others in the medical field. Unsure of what specialty to go into, he elected to serve in the U.S. Navy as a field medic to get better sense of what he would like to practice in. Through this, he was exposed to a vast range of medical practices, including emergency, obstetrics, surgical and radiology. While still actively serving, he attended college with the GI Bill and military scholarships, receiving an MD from the University of Nevada School of Medicine in 1988. When he resumed service, Dr. Van Tuyl became involved in radiation oncology. In addition, he was inspired to enter this vocation by his mentor, Roger Miercort, who was a commanding office and radiation oncologist in the military, and by his mother, who worked in a medical office.

Since 2016, Dr. Van Tuyl has utilized his extensive experience and skills as a co-medical director at the David Walsh Cancer Center: Sterling Regional MedCenter. In this role, he leads his staff and cares for patients in various oncologic practices, including bone marrow radiation oncology, breast radiation oncology, cancer genetics, cutaneous (skin) radiation oncology, gastrointestinal radiation oncology, genitourinary radiation oncology, gynecologic radiation oncology, head and neck radiation oncology, leukemia and lymphoma, neuro-oncology, radiation oncology, thoracic radiation oncology, and urologic oncology. He is certified in this work by the American Board of Radiology and holds state medical licenses in Arizona, Rhode Island, Washington, Nevada, and Colorado.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Van Tuyl is looking to continue modernizing and incorporating new modalities to his cancer care center. Since the center is based rurally, he endeavors to bring a new treatment modality and new services every year to improve the overall quality of the care at the facility. In recognition of the work in his career, he has been awarded as a diplomate of the American Board of Radiology and as a Fellow with the American College of Radiation Oncology. Furthermore, he is the recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Van Tuyl is most proud of being a physician in the military and where everyone that he deployed with came home as he never lost anyone.
