John F. Brown Haney, MD, Psychiatrist in Private Practice, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements and leadership in psychiatry.
A graduate of Yale University, Dr. Haney earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1964 and an MD from Yale University in 1959. He later completed an internship in medicine at the University of Colorado in 1965 and a residency in psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine in 1968. Prior to the start of his illustrious career, Dr. Haney served in the U.S. Navy on active duty at the Naval Submarine Base in New London, Connecticut, for two years and in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1970 to 1995.
Since 1970, Dr. Haney has been employed at his psychiatric private practice in eastern Connecticut. With his practice, he assists people with difficult mood swings and provides psychiatric information for nurse practitioners. In the past, he contributed 10 years at Natchaug Hospital in Mansfield, Connecticut, as the medical director from 1997 to 2003 and as an attending psychiatrist between 1993 and 2003. Earlier in his career, he served as the director of treatment from 1990 to 1992, and as the director of staff growth and development from 1986 to 1992 at Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown. Further, he worked as a psychiatrist at the University of Connecticut from 1970 to 1986 and was the chief of psychiatry at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base Hospital in Groton, Connecticut, from 1968 to 1970.
Likewise, Dr. Haney was also a consultant psychiatrist at the Youth Service Bureau in Mansfield from 1972 to 1993 and served as an associate professor at the University of Connecticut’s Farmington campus. Achievements to his credit include starting a drug treatment program in Eastern Connecticut, which is now celebrating its 50th anniversary and treating thousands of patients yearly. The highlights of his career were being recognized for 45 years with Perception Programs, of which he is the medical director and chairman of the board of directors. Additionally, Dr. Haney takes great pride in his lifetime membership in the Experimental Aircraft Association. He is also a life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a member of the American Medical Association and the American Group Psychotherapy Association.
