Rachel Gelman, MD, Ophthalmologist at the DHR Health Eye Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements and leadership in ophthalmology.
A leading expert in the industry, Dr. Gelman has been an ophthalmologist with the DHR Health Eye Institute since 2018. In addition to her primary role, she has worked pro bono for the Cataract Project. A respected voice in her community, Dr. Gelman is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Academy of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
Dr. Gelman first pursued an education with the University of Texas-Pan American, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science. She continued her studies with the Baylor College of Medicine, earning an MD in 2013. She then joined the University of Arizona, where she completed a residency. She then served a fellowship in cornea, anterior segment and refractive surgery at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute of the University of California Irvine in 2017. Dr. Gelman attributes her success to her faith and her family.
Dr. Gelman was inspired to pursue a career in the field from an early age, with her father having been a physician and anesthesiologist. He instilled in her the importance of taking care of the patient and focusing on the quality of care as the first priority. She was later further encouraged by her mentor, ophthalmologist Dr. Andrew Lee, who taught her about the eye and all of its workings. Dr. Gelman narrowed her interest even more by her interest in working with delicate procedures, and her skill as a pianist has helped her to develop the dexterity needed in cornea and cataract surgery work.
