Jean Bolen, Psychiatrist at Private Practice, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in psychiatry.
With nearly 60 years of professional experience, Dr. Bolen has held a private practice in psychiatry since 1967. In addition to her primary role, she has held a number of positions with the University of California San Francisco, including clinical professor from 1984 to 2010, associate clinical professor from 1976 to 1984, assistant clinical professor from 1969 to 1976, and clinical instructor from 1967 to 1969. From 1966 to 1974, she was a member of the faculty at the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco, and from 1963 to 1966 she held a residency with the UCSF Department of Psychiatry and the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute. Earlier in her career, she held a rotating internship with the Los Angeles General Hospital from 1962 to 1963.
Dr. Bolen was inspired to pursue a career in the field from an early age, having always had a desire to help people. She was further encouraged by her mother, who is a celebrated doctor and a pioneer in the industry. She first pursued an education with the University of California Los Angeles, completing coursework from 1954 to 1955, and she completed coursework with Pomona College from 1955 to 1957. She then joined the University of California Berkeley, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1958. She continued her studies with the school, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1962. She is a diplomate of both the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco.
A respected voice in her areas of interest, Dr. Bolen has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. She is a member of the International Association for Analytical Psychology, and she has served on the board of trustees for the Orthopsychiatric Association and the APA Council on Psychiatric Services. The former chair of the APA Council on National Affairs, she is a fellow of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry, the American Psychiatric Association, and the Northern California Psychiatric Society.
Throughout her career, Dr. Bolen has been recognized for her contributions. The recipient of the Women of the Decade in Thought Leadership from the Women Economic Forum, she also received the Cordoba Award in recognition of her contributions to the empowerment of women by the Secretary of Equity and Employment Promotion, Alejandra Vigo. She was given the Rai University Demeter Award for Leadership in Women’s Spirituality from the Association for the Study of Women in Mythology, the Women’s Human Rights Award from the Friends of the San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women, and the Women of Vision and Action Award. In light of her accomplishments, she has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who’s Who in America.
