Marilyn Ligon, Physician at North Alabama Family Medicine, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in family medicine.
In preparation for her career in medicine, Dr. Ligon attended The University of Alabama, where she graduated with an MD in 2004. Subsequently, she started as a physician at North Alabama Family Medicine, a position she has held since 2008. North Alabama Family Medicine is a full-service practice that offers a wide variety of medical services to patients ages 2 years old and above. In addition, Dr. Ligon served as a medical missionary in the Philippines, and she is also a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Dr. Ligon is originally from the Philippines, where there are government hospitals. While she was studying to become a medical technologist, she saw a child fall off of a transportation vehicle, and worked to look after him for a full day. Afterward, the boy succumbed to his injuries, and after that instance, Dr. Ligon decided to apply for a medical school scholarship. She went on to become one of only five people in the Philippines to acquire a scholarship to an American medical school.
To remain abreast of changes in her field, Dr. Ligon maintains affiliation with the Madison Medical Association. In her spare time, she enjoys numerous subjects and activities, including race cars, ninja-style martial arts, volleyball, and singing. During her college education, she was involved in competitive sports. Currently, Dr. Ligon continues her work, still visiting the clinic in addition to performing home visits for her patients. She also visits patients in hospice. Throughout her career, she has found motivation and inspiration through the patients who have remembered her name and thanked her. In one case, she will never forget the last words of a dying patient she cared for: “thank you.”
