C. Joan Richardson, Pediatrician and Educator at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in pediatrics and medical education.
Dr. Richardson became involved in medicine because it was the perfect way to combine her interests in science and service to others. She first pursued a formal education at the University of Texas at Austin, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1966. Four years later, she obtained an MD from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. In the subsequent years, she was certified through the American Board of Pediatrics and the sub-board of Neonatal-Prenatal Medicine.
In 1978, Dr. Richardson began working as an associate professor and the director of the neonatology division at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Though she has since taken on higher-up roles, she has never left the university. From 1974 until 1978, she was an assistant professor. In 1982, she was promoted to a full professor, which is a title that she holds today. In addition to her primary role, she became the chair of the pediatrics department in 2008. She has also found success in contributing numerous articles to professional publications alongside each of her professional endeavors.
One of Dr. Richardson’s proudest moments was establishing a newborn intensive care unit at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. An active member of her community, she is a member of the American Academy of Science, the Southern Perinatal Association, and the Texas Medical Association, among several other professional organizations. As a testament to her success, she is featured in the 2nd edition of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and the 16th edition of Who’s Who of American Women. More recently, in 2019, she became a recipient of the Albert Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award in light of her myriad accomplishments.
