Involved in social justice issues, which he learned about from his parents, Dr. Ammerman is a pediatrician in adolescent/addiction medicine at the Alliance Medical Center in Healdsburg, California, since 2019, as well as a staff physician in the General Pediatric and Adolescent Clinics at Mission Neighborhood Health Center in San Francisco since 1990 and an adviser for the community advocacy program at Boston Children’s Hospital since 1999. Holding many important positions throughout his career, he notably served as a clinical professor in the Department of Pediatrics of the Stanford University Medical Center and Lucile Salter Packard Children’s Hospital’s Division of Adolescent Medicine for a decade, among other roles. Additionally, he has been a visiting professor at numerous hospitals and a fellow in adolescent medicine at the University of California San Francisco from 1987 to 1989. Prior to the start of his career, Dr. Ammerman pursued a formal education at Tufts University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1976. He then attended George Washington University, where he attained an MD in 1980. He is also a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners since 1981 and the American Board of Pediatrics since 1986, as well as board-certified in adolescent and addiction medicine.

Highly active in his field, Dr. Ammerman has been a reviewer for myriad journals in his field including Contemporary Practices, the Journal of Adolescent Health, the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, the American Journal of Public Health, the Journal of Addiction Medicine and the American Journal on Addictions, among others. Since 2000, he has further given numerous selected invited presentations. A contributor to various written works, he maintains involvement with several organizations related to his field. In light of his achievements, in 2012, Dr. Ammerman received the Health Care Physician Award from the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal and the Founders Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics’ section on adolescent health. In 2014, he was awarded the Founders Award by the Children’s Health Fund and the San Francisco Bay Area Jefferson Award and, in 2015, he was honored with the San Francisco Bay Area Jefferson Award Silver Medal. Moreover, he was selected for inclusion in the 67th through 70th editions of Who’s Who in America. Moving forward, he believes that he will either be retired or working part-time.
