Evelyn V. Gopez, MD, Professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements and leadership in pathology.

With more than 20 years of professional experience, Dr. Gopez has been a professor of pathology with the University of Utah School of Medicine since 2010, having been an associate professor since 2002 and an assistant professor since 1997. In addition to her primary roles, she has held a number of other positions with the school, including associate dean of the Office of Inclusion and Outreach from 2012 to 2019, associate vice president of inclusion and health sciences from 2012 to 2014, and assistant dean of medicine from 2010 to 2012. Earlier in her career, Dr. Gopez was the director of cytology for the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center from 1998 to 2001.

Dr. Gopez first pursued an education with the University of Santo Tomas, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in 1975 and an MD in 1979. She continued her studies with the school, completing a residency in anatomic pathology from 1980 to 1982. She then relocated to the United States, holding an internship in psychiatry with Harvard Medical School, and a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology with Berkshire Medical Center from 1990 to 1994. She subsequently held fellowships in surgical pathology and cytopathology with the University of Pennsylvania from 1994 to 1996. Dr. Gopez is a graduate of the University of Utah executive leadership in academic medicine program.

A respected voice in her areas of interest, Dr. Gopez has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. She is a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Society of Clinical Pathology and the College of American Pathologists. A licensed physician in the state of Utah, she holds board certification in cytopathology and anatomic and clinical pathology with the American Board of Pathology. Dr. Gopez is a licensed physician with the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates.

Throughout her career, Dr. Gopez has been recognized for her contributions. A National Institutes of Health Scholar, she was given the Health Care Heroes Award and the Latino Medical Student Association gave her the Advisor Service Award, the Certificate of Appreciation and the Certificate of Excellence. She attributes much of her success to her persistence and having always had an interest in her work. Dr. Gopez is also driven by a desire to help teach others what she knows and help them succeed in the field.
