Elizabeth A. Shaughnessy, MD, PhD, staff surgeon at the University of Cincinnati, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements and leadership in education.
With more than 20 years of professional experience, Dr. Shaughnessy has been a staff surgeon with the University of Cincinnati Medical Center since 1997. In addition to her primary role, she has held a number of other positions with the organization, including breast surgical director since 2007, professor since 2012, associate professor from 2007 to 2012 and assistant professor from 1997 to 2007. Dr. Shaughnessy has also served as a staff surgeon with the Christ Hospital since 1997, the UC Physicians University Pointe Ambulatory Hospital since 2005 and West Chester Hospital since 2010, and was a consulting surgeon for the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center from 2000 to 2013.
Dr. Shaughnessy first pursued an education at the University of Illinois, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in biology, magna cum laude, in 1981. She continued her studies with the school, receiving an MD in 1985. She subsequently held a residency with the Cook County Hospital from 1985 to 1987 and a research fellowship with the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1987 to 1989. Dr. Shaughnessy then earned a PhD in anatomy and cell biology from the school in 1990, and she held a clinical and research fellowship with the City of Hope National Medical Center from 1993 to 1997. She has been licensed to practice in the States of Ohio, California and Illinois.
A respected voice in her community, Dr. Shaughnessy has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, she is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Society of Surgical Oncology and the American Association for Cancer Research. Dr. Shaughnessy has also been active with the Central Surgical Society, the Association of Women Surgeons, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the Central Surgical Association, the Sierra Club and Zeta Tau Alpha.
Throughout her career, Dr. Shaughnessy has been recognized for her accomplishments. The recipient of the Survivor Award from the American Cancer Society, she was named an Outstanding Educator by the University of Cincinnati and received the UC Health Patient Experience Award, the President’s National Award for Volunteerism and the Hospital Hero Award. Rolling Meadows High School additionally named her a Distinguished Alumna. The American Society of Clinical Oncology gave Dr. Shaughnessy a Young Investigator Award, and the University of Illinois gave her a Charles A. Schiff Award and a Ray and Joan Kroc Academic Scholar Award. She is an honorary inductee of Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha.
