Title: Cardiologist, Educator
Location: Memphis, Tennessee, United States
Howard R. Horn, MD, FACC, FACP, FAHA, Cardiologist and Educator, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of cardiology.
Dr. Horn has wanted to be a doctor for as long as he can remember. When the time came to choose a field, he chose cardiology because of his inclination to music. He has always found solace in comparing the rhythmic sounds of the chest, heart, and lungs to those of a musical melody. He pursued his undergraduate education at Vanderbilt University and later earned an MD from the University of Tennessee in 1964. He went on to practice medicine for several years at John Gaston Hospital, which is now renamed Regional Medical Center, at the University of Tennessee. He found much success in his various roles as he climbed the ladder from a medical intern to the chief resident. In 1976, Dr. Horn accepted an instructor position at Harvard Medical School. With this position, he uncovered a newfound passion for educating others.
Dr. Horn continued to work in education for several years at both Harvard University and the University of Tennessee. In 1990, the latter named him as the L.W. Diggs Alumni Endowed Professor of Medicine. He remained in that role until 2006. He is immensely proud of the work he has done in both institutions, though especially at Harvard due to the significant research contributions he made during his time there. His success is reflected in his collection of teaching awards, and he has a significant history of hundreds of invited national and international lectures. In combination with his main roles, Dr. Horn further demonstrates his knowledge by contributing articles to various professional journals. He is featured in the 8th edition of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and in 2019, he was awarded the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his many achievements.
