During his middle school years, Dr. Schieken became fascinated with physiology. He later decided that he wanted to pursue an academic medical career and was pleased when he received admission to all of the medical programs he initially applied to. Upon graduating from LaSalle University with a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in 1961, Dr. Schieken earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in 1965. Between 1965 to 1968, he completed a residency in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He was later a registrar at The Hospital for Sick Children, in London, UK, from 1967 to 1968. Dr. Schieken concluded his academic efforts by earning a Master of Science in Healthcare Administration at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1998.
At the start of his career, Dr. Schieken began his career as a fellow in pediatric cardiology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Subsequently, he worked as an assistant instructor of pediatrics at Georgetown University School of Medicine from 1971 to 1973, before finding success with the University of Iowa from 1973 to 1982 as a professor of pediatrics and also preventive medicine. Dr. Schieken has flourished with the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine as the chairman of the department of pediatric cardiology and professor of human genetics from 1982 to 2002 and as a clinical professor of pediatrics since 1982.
In a career filled with several highlights, Dr. Schieken is most proud of participating in a peer review for the National Institute of Health in Epidemiology and Disease Control. A respected voice in the field, he has published over related 100 articles and has contributed to the body of research surrounding pediatric cardiology. As a fellow of the American Heart Association, he was a member of the Epidemiology Council and the Council of Cardiovascular Disease in Children. In the past, he was also a member of the Association of European Pediatric Cardiology. A recipient of the Gold Barnwell Medal from Central High School in Philadelphia, Dr. Scheken also received the United States Army Commendation Medal among other accolades. An exceptional Marquis listee, Dr. Schieken has been featured in several editions of Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and Who’s Who in the South and Southwest.
