J. Max Austin, Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Director of Philanthropic Initiatives at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of higher education and medicine.
Dr. Austin grew up in Wetumpka on a dairy farm, where he developed a love of people and of learning. That heritage provided a strong work ethic that served him well during his medical career. In his teens he decided to go into medicine, attending Emory at Oxford. Following his graduation from Emory University in 1963, he attended the School of Medicine and graduated in 1967.
He completed internships and residencies at Mobile General Hospital, Emory University, and the School of Medicine at UAB where he became Chief Resident in 1971. Dr. Austin also served as a Major and as Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Homestead Air Force Base in Florida from 1971 to 1973. In true pioneer fashion, Dr. Austin became the first fellow in Gynecologic Oncology at UAB in 1973. For 23 years he was in private practice while serving as faculty member at UAB. In 2000, he closed his practice so that he could join the UAB Division of Gynecologic Oncology as a full-time professor.
During his tenure, Dr. Austin trained 42 fellows and over 250 residents and still remembers them. To Dr. Austin it is relationships that matter most. He has said that the most rewarding experience in his career was the education and training of students, residents, and fellows.
A past Chair of the Alabama Section of ACOG, Dr. Austin has served as President of the South Central Obstetrical and Gynecological Society, the Society of Gynecologic Oncology and in several capacities for the Alabama Division of the American Cancer Society. He has been honored with an Endowed Chair in Gynecologic Oncology at UAB and in 2010, received the Paul W. Burleson Award from the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. He has also been nominated numerous times by his students for teaching awards including Excellence in Medical Student Education.
Dr. Austin and his wife, Nancy, take great pride in their two children, Lindsey and Max, and in their five grandchildren. Dr. Austin remains grounded by spending time at his timber farm in Elmore County, Alabama.
As said in his nomination letter, “Dr. Austin epitomizes the ultimate as a physician servant and as a gentleman doctor.” He was nominated by colleagues Dr. Pink Folmar and Dr. Ed Partridge.
