Irvin LeRoy Heimburger, Retired Surgeon, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of medicine.
Since following his family’s legacy and becoming a surgeon, Dr. Heimburger has accrued over 40 years of professional experience. Finding his beginning as a student, he pursued an education at Drury College and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1953. He completed additional coursework and graduated with an MD from Vanderbilt University in 1957. As diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Heimburger began his professional career as an intern at Vanderbilt University Hospital, where he worked from 1957 to 1958, and transitioned to a position as a resident-in-surgery at Indiana University Hospital, where he remained until 1963. Afterward, he became a thoracic fellow at the Leeds University Hospital in England from 1963 to 1964 before returning to the United States, working his way from instructor to clinical associate professor at the Indiana University Medical Center from 1964 to 1980.
Within that time, Dr. Heimburger also served as a member of the medical staff at St. Mary Medical Center and at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville IN, while beginning his private practice in 1966 until his retirement in 1998. He has contributed articles to several professional journals and is a member of the Central Surgical Association, the International Cardiovascular Society, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Midwest Surgical Society, and the American Philatelic Society. Learning how to be a good doctor by listening to his patients, Dr. Heimburger advises those entering the field to love what they do, do their best, and to get good mentors and training. Dr. Irvin Heimburger and his wife Marcia Heimburger are the proud parents of their children Angela, Jeffrey, Christian, Jenny and grandchildren Jake, Julia, and Kelly Heimburger, Charlie, Peter, Douglas, and Gideon Henneberger.
