Renowned as a psychiatrist and neurologist, Dr. Wharton has thrived as an attending psychiatrist at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital since 1980 and as a professor at the College of Physicians and Surgeons since 1984. He started his career as the captain of the U.S. Army Medical Corps, where he developed an interest in studying why people make the decisions they do. From that point on, Dr. Wharton has dedicated himself to achieving his goals. He became certified in neurology and psychiatry in 1969, earned a degree in psychoanalysis from Columbia University in 1970, and obtained positions like an associate professor at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, a senior research psychiatrist at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, and a psychiatric service supervisor and senior consultant at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
The highlight of Dr. Wharton’s career was discovering the uses of Lithium for patient care. Teaching has also been a highly gratifying part of his journey, as has sponsoring the Wharton Professorship in Psychiatry at the Columbia University Health Center in 2008 and sponsoring multiple pilot research projects at Columbia Medical Center. In recognition of his efforts, Dr. Wharton was named Distinguished Practitioner of the Year by the Columbia University Medical Center Society of Practitioners in 2010, among other accolades. When Dr. Wharton isn’t working, he enjoys skiing, sailing, and maintaining affiliation with the Lotos Literacy Club and the Century Association.
