Dr. Amer grew up in Egypt and immigrated to the United States in 1958. He studied at the University of Illinois at Chicago, earning a Master of Science in pharmacology in 1960, and a PhD in pharmacology in 1962. He continued his studies later in his career, attending Columbia University and earning a Master of Business Administration in 1980. In 1966, he started as a senior research pharmacologist and project coordinator for Wilson Laboratories Inc., then transitioned to a role as director of cardiovascular pharmacology at Mead Johnson & Co. in 1969. After eight years with the company, Dr. Amer became the director of biological research at Bristol-Myers International Division. In 1985, he co-founded Amstell Inc., and served as president until 1988. In 1986, he co-founded Top Laboratories Inc., and in 1989, he co-founded Amer Particle Technology, where he worked until 1995.

Currently, Dr. Amer serves as president of Sam Amer & Co. Inc., where he has worked since 1983. He holds over 15 patents and helped decode the role of cyclic nucleotides in hypertension and gastric secretion. Additionally, he helped discover the mechanism of action of beta-blockers in hypertension and mechanisms of hormone action in the heart. Dr. Amer is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology and Clinical and Experimental Hypertension. He is also a member of the American Society of Biological Chemists, the American Federation for Clinical Research, and the New York Academy of Sciences. He has been an invited speaker at numerous conferences, including Synthetic Cyclic Nucleotides and Therapeutic Perspectives, the Gastrointestinal Pharmacology Group Conference, and Cyclic Nucleotides in Disease. Dr. Amer’s experience, success, and research contributions solidify him as an elite pharmacologist in the field.
