David Tom, Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon at New England Retina Associates, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in ophthalmology.

Interested in the functions of the human body and how it works, Dr. Tom was drawn to the field at an early age. He found his way to ophthalmology due to his fascination with technology and engineering. This field of medicine utilizes many devices and innovations, which was a perfect fit for his interest in physics and the physical transformations of a human body. He has been a retinal surgeon with the New England Retina Associates since 1999 and in that time has helped many patients with their eye health and care.

Prior to joining New England Retina Associates, Dr. Tom served as an electrical engineer for NASA from 1989 to 1999. He has also taught as an assistant professor at Yale University Hospital and lead clinical trials and research. Dr. Tom earned a Master of Arts from the University of Maryland before continuing at George Washington University to receive an MD in 1991. He continued with an internship in internal medicine and then a residency in ophthalmology. He furthered his skills and expertise with a fellowship at the Manhattan Eye and Ear Throat Hospital in New York City from 1995 to 1997.

Dr. Tom has always endeavored to provide patients in his charge with the best possible care. Due to the nature of his work, he has been elected to Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors for more than seven years. He has also been recognized as a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In 2018, he was listed among Connecticut’s Best Doctors by Connecticut Magazine. He has also maintained affiliation with the American Society of Retina Specialists throughout his career. In addition to his residency director at Yale University, Peter Liggett and Lauren Yannuzzi, Dr. Tom credits his wife Claudia as one of the biggest motivators and supporters of his career.
