Daniel Lestage, Retired Military Officer and Physician, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership as a healthcare professional.

Dr. Lestage is a retired surgeon who devoted the last 14 years of his career as a corporate medical director and vice president of health care service with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida in Jacksonville. An expert in health care policy, he is also a retired military officer and physician who first enlisted in the United States Navy in 1960, served as a commander and advanced to rear admiral by 1986. With a career that dates to 1965, he first served as a staff flight surgeon and medical officer with Carrier Air Wing 16 on the USS Oriskany at the Naval Air Station in Lemoore, California. In more recent years, Dr. Lestage was a commander at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Virginia, inspector general at the Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery and assistant director of naval medicine at the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations.

Since embarking upon his career, Dr. Lestage lent his expertise to academia as an assistant dean at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk between 1981 and 1983 and associate dean between 1990 and 1992. He also served as a trustee of the American Board of Preventive Medicine and on the board of directors of Health Options Inc. and the Health Planning Council of Northeast Florida. Dr. Lestage continued to serve on the board of the United Service Organizations of Northeast Florida, the Florida Association of Health Plans and the Jacksonville chapter of Legatus International.

An alumnus of Louisiana State University, Dr. Lestage earned an undergraduate degree and a Doctor of Medicine in 1959 and 1963, respectively. He soon after graduated from the Naval School of Aviation in 1964, received a Master of Public Health from Tulane University in 1969 and a diploma from the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy in 1978. Additional educational pursuits include the completion of a rotating internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, a residency in family practice at Lafayette Charity Hospital in Louisiana and a student flight surgeon position at the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute in Pensacola, Florida. Dr. Lestage is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Preventive Medicine and holds a residency certificate from the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute.

An elected fellow, past president and chair of the fellows’ group of the Aerospace Medical Association, Dr. Lestage is also a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Preventive Medicine and the American Academy of Family Physicians. He is also notably a past president and member of the board of directors of the Florida Academy of Family Physicians Foundation, past president of the Florida Society for Preventive Medicine and past board of directors’ member and chancellor of the International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine. Dr. Lestage is active with several organizations related to his military career as well, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and the American Legion.

The recipient of multiple awards, Dr. Lestage recently received a Rear Admiral Robert C. Adams Award for Most Significant Contributions to Operational Aerospace Medicine in 2017. Other recognitions include a We Care Jacksonville Award of Service in 2013, the President’s Citation from the Aerospace Medical Association in 2011, the Captain Robert E. Mitchell Lifetime Contribution to Naval Aerospace Medicine Award by the Society of U.S. Naval Flight Surgeons in 1999 and over a dozen Physician’s Recognition Awards by the American Medical Association between 1972 and 2006. He also received several military recognitions, including a Legion of Merit with Four Oak Leaf Clusters, a Meritorious Service Medal, an Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and a Navy Commendation Award. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Lestage has been featured in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest and Who’s Who in the World.
