Don Lewis McCord, Surgeon, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in medicine.
As a young man, Dr. McCord was inspired to pursue a career in medicine through his personal experience with physicians. During his high school education, he resolved to pursue an MD, and in 1949, he earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Abilene Christian University. Afterward, he was accepted to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and earned an MD in 1953.
Dr. McCord embarked on his long career of service in the medical profession as an intern at University Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, from 1953 to 1954, before enlisting in the United States Navy. In 1955, he served as a resident in surgery at the United States Naval Hospital in Oakland, California, and in 1959, he became the assistant chief of surgery for the United States Naval Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas. Dr. McCord remained in this position until 1962, rising to the rank of lieutenant commander in the Navy before his honorable discharge.
Following his service in the Navy, Dr. McCord continued to practice medicine in Texas, starting his own private practice in 1962. He continued to provide excellent medical care to patients at his practice, and in 1974, he joined a group practice in Clifton, Texas. In 1986, he returned to his private practice. Dr. McCord’s experience as a surgeon brought him to Hamilton General Hospital, where he offered his expertise as a consultant in surgery from 1988 to 1996 while continuing to maintain his private practice. In 1990, Dr. McCord became the section chief of general surgery for Medical City Dallas Hospital, a position he held until 1992.
As an elite surgeon, Dr. McCord maintains memberships with the American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, Dallas County Medical Society, and Dallas Society of General Surgeons. In addition, he is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a certified diplomate of the American Board of Surgery. As the only surgeon in a small town, he has been an invaluable member of his local medical community. His dedication, experience, and extensive body of service as a doctor solidify his status as an exemplar of excellence in the medical profession.
