Deborah J. Dr. DeWaay first started her own education at Grinnell College, earning a BA in political science in 1998. Since earning an MD from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in 2005, she has built an extensive body of professional experience. She started her medical education career in 2008 as an instructor at the Medical University of South Carolina, where she later became the associate vice chair for medical education from 2010 to 2016, during which she continued her work as a professor. Similarly, in her current role at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, which she began in 2016, Dr. DeWaay serves simultaneously as the associate dean of undergraduate medical education and as an associate professor of medicine. This allows her to influence and improve medical education from both a top-down and bottom-up perspective.
Dr. DeWaay’s excellence and success in her profession have been recognized with myriad awards. She received the Thomas J. Parsons Award for Humanism in Internal Medicine in 2005, won the MUSC Golden Apple Teaching Award in 2010, and received the Department of Medicine Excellence in Teaching Award in 2015, among numerous others. In addition to her membership to the American Medical Association since 2008, Dr. DeWaay has also been a member of the Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine and Alliance of Academic Internal Medicine since 2009. In 2010, she became a fellow of the American College of Physicians and was a member of the Society of General Internal Medicine from 2010 to 2017. Dr. DeWaay is critically aware of the flaws in the healthcare system and has dedicated her life to changing that system for the better through exemplary medical education and never losing sight of the physician-patient relationship, that originally inspired her interest in the profession.
