Dr. Bauer was inspired to enter the field of surgery because of his father, August Robert. He was an accomplished pediatrician who pioneered the neonatal intensive care practice of the incubator resuscitator at Henry Ford Hospital. In addition, Dr. Bauer became involved in his profession because at the time surgery was often the most widely used method of controlling damaged or diseased tissue to allow the patient to survive. He decided to pursue his passion professionally and matriculated at the University of Michigan where he earned a BS in 1949, an MS in 1950, and an MD in 1954. After these accomplishments, he received an M in Medical Science-Surgery from Ohio State University in 1960. He has held myriad roles throughout the course of his career including, but not limited to, working at the Central Michigan Community Hospital as the chief of staff and as a clinical faculty member of Michigan State Medical School. Currently, Dr. Bauer works as a surgeon in a private practice in Salt Lake City.

While doing a study on lymphocytes working against pancreatic cancer, Dr. Bauer was one of the first to understand that the immune system recognizes a cancer cell sooner than anything else in the body and defends the body against it. Dr. Bauer was nationally recognized for a presentation he gave on the subject and eventually applied for a patent for the idea. In addition to his main pursuits, Dr. Bauer served in the Medical Corps of the United States Army from 1954 to 1957. As a testament to his success, he has been inducted as a member of various esteemed organizations such as the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Medical Association, the Zollinger Surgical Society, and the Salt Lake Surgical Society, among other organizations.
