Steven Kyle Grinspoon, MD, medical educator and director of the Massachusetts General Hospital, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in research and academia.
The factors or attributes that Dr. Grinspoon has learned over the course of his career that has most benefited him in his professional growth is creativity, persistence, and understanding. These characteristics are evident in his multiple roles with the Harvard Medical School. He is regarded for his work as a professor of medicine, principal of the Training Grant Nutritional Metabolism program, co-director of the Clinical Nutritional Research Center, and executive committee member for the Division of Nutrition. Dr. Steven Grinspoon is a recognized authority on metabolic and neuroendocrine dysregulation of visceral adiposity. More broadly, he is recognized for his contributions to the understanding of abnormal fat distribution, and the resultant metabolic and inflammatory changes in lipodystrophy. His work investigates the nutritional regulation of pituitary function and encompasses a broad focus including the mechanism by which fat regulates neuroendocrine function, the mechanisms of insulin resistance in fat redistribution and acquired lipodystrophy and the role of altered nutrient trafficking in visceral obesity. He has also done extensive research in the prevalence of hypogonadism and determined the utility of testosterone to reverse sarcopenia in HIV patients, as well as the prevalence of reduced growth hormone secretion in HIV patients. In recognition of his excellent work in his career, Dr. Grinspoon was the recipient of an Outstanding Investigator award from the American Federation for Medical Research and an AOA Alumni of the Year Award. He has also been listed among the Best Doctors in America and the Top Doctors in Endocrinology and Metabolism by Boston Magazine.
A great point of pride for Dr. Grinspoon is that he has been able to serve as a research mentor throughout his career. He has mentored more than 25 postdoctoral fellows, countless clinical fellows, 40 pre-doctoral students who have gone on to medical school and many generations of professionals including residents and chief residents. Dr. Grinspoon’s expertise is supported by his own education, which includes a Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University, an honorary Master of Arts from Harvard University and an MD from the University of Rochester. He is also a two-time diplomate in endocrinology and metabolism by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Driven by his love of his work, Dr. Grinspoon intends to continue in his research work in the years to come while taking on new opportunities to impact his industry.
