An orthopedic surgeon specializing in shoulder and knee injuries related to sports, Dr. Loughran has met with success in his career by being actively available to athletes. “In sports medicine, the injuries are occurring at games and at events; they aren’t happening at the hospital,” he says, adding that his priority to be available means being present and on the sideline at games so that he is the first face athletes see the moment they get hurt. Dr. Loughran has traveled all over the world and has developed a reputation of excellence driven by his commitment to his work. As part of his commitment, Dr. Loughran continues in his professional development through workshops, seminars and coursework in order to constantly remain at the top of his field and progress each year. Dr. Loughran also teaches sports medicine at the university’s hospital, where he shares his years of experience with future surgeons. Previously, he served as VCU’s orthopedic consultant for the Society of Sports Therapy/United Kingdom.

Dr. Loughran possesses a total of 42 years of experience in his field. To prepare for his career, he earned a Doctoral degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University in 1977. Shortly thereafter, he became board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and obtained a physician license from the Virginia Board of Medicine. Dr. Loughran was driven to his profession because of his own experiences being injured due to sports. After he sustained an Achilles tendon injury while playing basketball, he received excellent care from a surgeon, who inspired him to follow the path to sports medicine. Today, Dr. Loughran is active within his professional community through his memberships with the American Academy of Sports Medicine, the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Looking ahead, Dr. Loughran intends to continue providing top care for his patients while seeking new opportunities to mentor and inspire the next generation of surgeons in his field.
