Joseph Schmidt, Professor Emeritus of the University of California, San Diego, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academia.
With 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Schmidt has been recognized as professor emeritus of the University of California, San Diego since 2006. Prior to his retirement, he was a professor with the school from 1976 to 2006, also serving as vice chair of surgery from 1985 to 1997 and head and chair of urology from 1976 to 2006. Earlier in his career, he was on the faculty at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine from 1969 to 1976.
Dr. Schmidt began his career as a student at the University of Illinois, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in medicine in 1959. He continued his studies with the school, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1961. He then joined Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital (now Rush University Medical Center) for a rotating internship until 1962 and a surgery residency from 1962 to 1963. He subsequently held a residency in urology with the Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1963 to 1967. Dr. Schmidt is a diplomate of the American Board of Urology.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Schmidt has been an active leader in his community. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he is a member of the American Urological Association, Inc., and Alpha Omega Alpha. She has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the West, and Who’s Who in the World.
