Michael Meguid, Professor Emeritus and Medical Science Writer, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nutrition and medical science.
Dr. Meguid went into his field because he contracted appendicitis at 11 years old. He had his appendix removed and was fascinated with how one person could make you feel better. He continued to explore this fascination with his academic pursuits, first earning an MBBS from the University College Hospital Medical School in 1968, a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1981. Since 1997, Dr. Meguid has served as the Director of the combined surgical research laboratory in the Department of Surgery at the University Hospital. Furthermore, he has been the director of nutrition service at the institution since and the director of the Surgical Metabolism and Nutrition Laboratory since 1984.
In the field, Dr. Meguid has patents for a gastric procedure for weight loss and holds patents for common imultaneoud gene expressions in normal weight, obesity and after weight loss in hypothalamus and in subcutaneous fat relevant to metabolic syndrome. He is a fellow of the North American Association for the Study of Obesity and the American College of Surgeons, and is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and the American Surgical Association among various other professional affiliations. In 1997, he received the Joseph B. Goldberger Award in Clinical Nutrition from the American Medical Association and was elected as a fellow of the International Behavioral Neuroscience Society that same year.
